This article contains information on sleeping bags and sleeping gear.

You really need to decide what sort of weather you are most likely to use your sleeping bag in. If you are going to use it in a dry environment where you can air it then a down bag still gives better insulation weight for weight than a man made filling bag will do.

A good quality down bag will, with the right care last longer (maintain its loft) as well. However if damp, a man made fiber bag may provide better warmth.
Here are some preferences:

1) Use a combination of bags.

2) Have a 2-3 season insulated sleeping bag that you can use with either cotton or fleece liner. This allows best matching the insulation with the prevailing weather conditions and so preventing overheating and excessive sweating which will dampen the fill of the sleeping bag. It takes up a bit more room than a single bag but it worth the space. It also means that the sleeping bag needs less washing and that the liners can be washed more often without damaging the sleeping bag. The liners are also easier to air, dry and wash while camping.

3) Make sure you can care and do care for the bags as detailed in their instructions. Most bags need to be kept “uncompressed” (lying flat (under a bed on a wardrobe) or hanging, not in their compression sack.

4) Budget for, buy and use a sleeping bag liner.

5) Most of heat loss is through the base of the bag (the bit you lie on) as the filling is compressed so make sure you have a good ground mat.

6) Get a breathable (it is very important that it is breathable) sleeping bag cover. It will add about 3/4 (.75) of a season to your bag (my estimate).

How you avoid slipping and sliding in sleeping bag on a pad? You could try to sleep on a cot. You could try to put some Velcro on your sleeping bag and pad which would keep you from slipping and sliding off your pad.

Another idea is to put something on the sides of your pad or dig a small trench for your pad. This would in effect put some edges on your pad and keep you in your bag.

There are several choices when it comes to sleeping pads. First, there’s the typical air mattress, which must be blown up, usually by a battery-operated pump or a foot pump. It is comfortable, with good insulation against cold ground, but a bit of work, also, a bit bulky and subject to leaking from time to time.

Second, you have the Thermarest style pads; requires only a little mouth-delivered air, but only from 1/2 to 1 and 1/2 inch thick; relatively comfortable, good insulation from cold ground, durable, rolls into a small bundle.

For car camping, go with the thickest mattress, as weight is not an issue. Also, lengths vary, as do widths, so get what fits your needs.

Finally, there are the foam pads – various thicknesses, no work, most durable, pretty good insulation against cold ground, roll into small bundles, multiple uses due to durability, but probably the least comfortable. Get a thick pad (more than an inch thick), and you should be all right.

This article contains information about headlamps, flashlights and lanterns.

Recently, flashlights which use light-emitting diodes (LEDs) instead of conventional light bulbs have become available. LEDs have existed for decades, mainly as low-power indicator lights. In 1999, Lumileds Corporation of San Jose, CA introduced the Luxeon LED, a high-power white-light emitter. For the first time this made possible LED flashlights with power and running time better than some incandescent lights.

The first Luxeon LED flashlight was the Arc LS in 2001.LEDs can be significantly more efficient at lower power levels, hence use less battery energy than normal light bulbs. Such flashlights have longer battery lifetimes, in some cases hundreds of hours, although the LED efficiency advantage diminishes at higher power levels. LEDs also survive sharp blows that often break conventional light bulbs.

LED flashlights are often electronically regulated to maintain constant light output as the batteries fade. By contrast a non-regulated flashlight becomes progressively dimmer, sometimes spending much of the total running time below 50 percent brightness level.A common misconception about LED-based flashlights is that they generate no heat.

While lower-power LED flashlights generate little heat, more powerful LED lights do generate significant amounts of heat. For this reason higher-powered LED flashlights usually have metal bodies and can become warm during use.A headlamp is a flashlight worn on the head for hands-free operation. Powerful headlamps mounted on helmets have been used in mining for decades, but general-purpose ones with fabric straps are now also available. Sometimes a light is mounted to a handgun or rifle.

Most flashlights are cylindrical in design, with the lamp assembly attached to one end. However, early designs came in a variety of shapes. Many resembled lanterns of the day, consisting largely of a box with a handle and the lamp attached to the front. Some others were made to have a similar appearance to candles. It is possible that future developments of battery and LED technology will bring interesting new designs.

For instance, one very small light that exists now in 2004 consists of a few LEDs with a switch, designed to be an end cap for a 9-volt battery. High-quality flashlights go for as much as several hundreds of dollars. Such flashlights are very advanced, using special batteries, have adjustable brightness levels, dive-depth waterproof ratings, interchangeable optics, and are very bright.

Lantern is another important source of light while camping. Some lanterns are battery-powered and have simple light bulbs, but bright and efficient electric lanterns will employ a specialized power supply to operate a fluorescent type. They are easy to use and comparatively durable, but less bright than propane or liquid fuel lanterns.

Depending on the design, these lanterns may use disposable batteries, rechargeable replaceable batteries, or permanently-installed rechargeable batteries and either require battery replacement, or if rechargeable and not constantly plugged in must be brought to full charge every few months by plugging in.

Some rechargeable fluorescent lanterns may be plugged in at all times and may be set up to illuminate upon a power failure, a useful feature in some applications. During extensive power failures (or for remote use), supplemental recharging may be provided from an automobile’s twelve volt electrical system or from a modest solar powered charger.

This article contains information on how to waterproof your tent and shoes while camping and hiking.

The leather kind of shoes is much more comfortable and flexible, especially at lower altitudes. There are commercial waterproofing confounds. There should be at least two layers of protection between the boots and your feet. You may consider use of a synthetic sock for carrying moisture away from my feet and a synthetic/wool mixture for the outer sock for warmth and cushioning. You may want to add another sock the outer layer for additional warmth.

It is recommended some form of waterproofing but I don’t think plastic boots are necessary at 6000 meters.People have been walking in leather shoes on the snow. The only safety and health considerations would be if the boots are waterproofed (waxes or oils will keep your feet from getting wet and exacerbating hypothermia), or the tred is sufficient to prevent slips and falls (the number-one cause of death and injury in the outdoors – bar none).

There is an old recipe for waterproofing using bees wax and petroleum jelly melted together in equal parts and rubbed vigorously into a warmed shoe or boot (it softens the hands at the same time). You will need to dry and heat shoes and boots on the open door of an oven, heated to about 200 degrees.

When the boots were dry and hot, they would brush Neat’s-foot Oil into the pores of the leather. It is called the weekly shoe-bake.There are a lot of good commercial waterproofs for boots that work as well. Snow Seal is one that was produced out west in the U.S. and works pretty well waterproofing they advise. It’s be either silicone, a polymer, or some sort of organic oil or wax. Clean the boots, let them dry, and apply the waterproofing according to instructions provided with the product.

There are important advices on products & methods of waterproofing a tent. The best suggestion is to go to a camping store and buy commercial seam sealer and waterproofing supplies. A lot can depend on the type of fabric and where it is leaking. If your tent is leaking around the seams, this is because there are tiny pin holes in and around the seam created by the sowing process. If this is the case, seam sealer alone will probably do the trick.

Seam sealer can come in two types, seam tape or liquid seam sealer. A urethane-based seam sealer is better because it is more flexible in cold temperatures and creates a better bond with the tent fabric. A disadvantage is that it is messier to use than tape.If the fabric itself is leaking you can get a silicone-based water repellent treatment for all kinds of tent and tarp fabrics.

Most pretreated tents come from the factory with the coating on the inside. If you touch the inside of the tent with your fingers, the oils on your fingers can react with the treatment causing it to become less effective. Spraying it on the outside can help by preventing the material from absorbing water, causing it to be lighter when carrying a wet tent.

Products with UV treatment can slow fading and reduce fabric degradation from harmful UV rays.Just make sure that you get the right product for the fabric of your tent. If you wanted to make your own you just need a substance that doesn’t mix with water. Some items that you could use includes…Lanolin – boil some sheep’s wool and scrape the oil of the top. Do you have any sheep? This is flammable.

Coal Tar – Heat powered coal over a fire in a metal container and collect the liquid evaporating from the heated coal with a pipe leading from the container into a series of bottles. This is creosote and is used to waterproof railroad ties. This is very flammable.
Beeswax – You can buy this or raise bees. This is quite flammable.Flax – Can be taken from the fleshy flax leaves, just underneath the tough skin. Not real flammable but will burn.

There are several types of accessories to choose from when looking for camping and hiking cook ware to take along with you on your outdoor trips.

After a long day burning calories while hiking the trails, your body craves food, and as the cool evening settles in, your body will enjoy the meal even more if it is warm-or a least if the beverage is warm.

For winter or mountaineering trips a warm meal moves from convenience to necessity and with the right type of stainless steel cookware and the right stove you will have a great meal. Many of these types of pots have a unique lid-locking system that helps them to be a backpacker’s favorite.

For some reason, food cooked outdoors always taste better than food cooked in a kitchen, which may because of the fresh air, or maybe just the thought of cooking a good meal without all the amenities of a stocked kitchen. Either way, there’s nothing quite like it.

If you love cooking outdoors, whether you are backpacking, canoing or camping you can still have quality cooked meals. Since you enjoy the outdoor cooking experience, then you are sure to load your assortment of gear with a good set of cooking utensils.

One of the most important cooking necessities that come to mind is pots and pans, because without those it would be tough to make any kind of tasty meal. Most camp boxes are filled with an array of smaller, packable cooking devices, but some times you need all kinds of stuff to conjure up the right meal.

Often times you will find an old reliable that will never let you down and many pots comes in three sizes and are very durable and easy to clean, but their handiest features are their locking lids. Few of these pots on the market come with a unique system that uses the pot’s handle to double as a lid-locking device. If you’re clumsy as I am, then that could keep you from losing any of your precious dinner on a back country trip.

Often, a camp stove is not as stable as you would like and it keeps a wobbly stove and pot from spilling valued chow. Many are these pots are designed so that you can store dry food in them or a safe spot to store your dish washing kit or anything you do not want wandering around your pack.

Over the past few years manufacturers of lightweight BTU-spewers have made significant advances. From multi-fuel capacity to flame control to heat output, today’s stoves are efficient, low impact and lightweight. Many of the stoves on the market today also perform well despite sub-freezing temperatures, gusty winds, or high altitudes. Fuel type is the principal distinction between stoves with the two main categories being canister fuel and liquid fuel.

Canister fuel stoves require that you purchase fuel in a pre-filled metal or aluminum containers. The canister usually contains a propane-butane blend, but most canisters cannot be carried on planes or shipped through commercial companies, so you must be sure to bring enough, or call ahead to see if the destination has them available. Generally, canister fuels do not perform as well as liquid fuels in cold temperatures.

Liquid fuel stoves utilize white gas, kerosene, or automobile gas, which occasionally specific stoves allow you to burn other types of liquid fuel. These stoves burn well at high elevations and perform great in cold weather, but the down side of liquid fuel is the potential for spilling when refilling the fuel bottle, and the need to pressurize the fuel through some sort of pumping.

Some no-muss, no-fuss tips for using foil to cook campfire meals.

Foil is easy to use to cook over the campfire. It is light-weight, inexpensive, widely available, can be used to cook a variety of meals, and cleanup is extremely easy. Just roll the foil up and toss in the garbage. You can even eat right out of the foil packet if you want.
Here are some tips for using foil to cook campfire meals:
1. Foil cooking depends on moisture inside the foil packet, so make sure that the folds of your foil packet are tight and that the food you are cooking has sufficient moisture. If not, add some by folding the packet up except for one end, and then add a tablespoon or two of water, broth, salad dressing, or butter before you seal the packet. Sliced onions can also be used to add moisture.
2. Cooking time will vary depending on the temperature of the coals. Make sure to cook your meal sufficiently. Check one packet for doneness before pulling all of them out of the fire. That way you will only have to rewrap up one packet if they still need more time. Remember that some vegetables (potatoes and carrots, for example), may take more time to cook through.
3. You can also put newspaper between the layers of aluminum foil to help keep the food from burning.
4. For quick foil meals, microwave the food before wrapping in aluminum foil. Then when you get to camp, you only have to warm up the foil packets instead of cooking them completely, which will shorten your cooking time considerably.
5. If you need to warm something up, wrap it in foil and put it near the edge of the fire, turning occasionally (I have warmed up tortillas for burritos this way, for example).
6. Use heavy-duty foil. While a bit more expensive, the extra thickness will help keep your food from burning and will conduct the heat better. Two layers are best. While a common suggestion is to put the shiny side of the foil to the inside of the packet (to reflect heat better, I suppose),
Reynolds says that it doesn’t matter which side of the aluminum foil you use. Both sides do the same job. Even so, I have always put the shiny side in and I suspect most of you do the same.

Buying a camping tent for your family can be confusing. Here are five tips to help you make your decision; the hows, why's and wherefore's of tent shopping and buying.

Our family has been camping for over a year now and we love it. When we decided to make the commitment to buy a camping tent, we spent time visiting local outdoor stores to get advice. I was surprised on how many types of tents were available and it was difficult trying to determine the right tent for our family. Plus, I realized that camping tents aren’t cheap.

With average tent prices starting at $200, I didn’t want to rush and buy the first tent I saw. However, after doing some research we bought our first tent and our family has been happy ever since. In fact, we actually made two tent purchases, one for me and my wife and one for my two sons. To save you some time, I have written down some of quick tips to help you make your decision.

There are a number of factors to look at when you start your research. First, find out the actual weight and size of the tent when it is packed up. This factor comes into play if you plan on hiking to your campsite. The last thing you want to do is buy a heavy tent and have to haul it for a long distance. Remember, you will have more than your tent to carry so weight is important.

If you are planning on hiking for most of your outdoor adventures, you might want to look for an ultra-light tent. These tents are designed to be as light as possible and take up very little space in your pack.

Second, find out the floor space size and peak height of the tent. Both of these statistics are important on making the right choice. By checking the floor space you will make sure you will actually fit in the tent when you lay down. This factor is especially valuable if you are tall and don’t want to have your feet sticking out the end of the tent.

The next factor is the peak height, which is the highest point in the tent. If you want some head room in the tent you will want to compare tents by this factor. However, if you are like me, this factor wasn’t that important. We didn’t spend that much time in the tent during the day. We basically used the tent to sleep and change. So I wasn’t too concerned about this issue.

Third, you want to determine the size of tent or tents that will fit your family. In our case, we wanted a little privacy so we decided to buy two tents. We bought one tent for me and my wife plus one tent for our two boys. You might want to consider this step for your family. Buying two (or more) tents gives you some alone time with your spouse and it also gives you a private area to change your clothes.

Fourth, you may want to choose a tent that is a little bigger than your need. I originally wanted to buy a two person tent for me and my wife. However, after some research I realized that a two person tent only gives you room for two people and that’s about it. We would only have room for our sleeping bags. In our case, we decided to go with a three person tent have extra space for our stuff.

Finally, try to determine how much you want to spend on your tent before you hit the store. When we were about to choose our tent I was determined to be as cheap as possible, but I realized this wasn’t the way to go. I wanted our tent to last for a few seasons and some of the cheaper tents weren’t that sturdy.

You really have to decide how many times you plan on going camping each year. If you are only camping once or twice each year you might be able to get away with a cheaper tent. But if you plan on using the tent multiple times each year, you will want to invest in a quality tent.

I hope this article can help you on your first family tent purchase. Again, just take your time and do the research before you buy. See you around the campsite!

Warm weather signals one thing to me – it’s grilling time! Time to fire up that grill and get cooking.

Of course hamburgers and steaks taste great on the grill just as they are. But when you want to serve up something that is just a bit different we have some suggestions.

First of all Grilled Texas Beef Steak, grilled steak with a bit of pizzazz. A mix of cumin, chili powder, cayenne and garlic pack a punch.

Asian Grilled Pork Tenderloin is an original recipe that combines flavorful Asian seasonings with the fruitiness of orange juice. A nice mix.

Barbecued Peach Pork Chops combines pork with fruit, always a good combination, and tops it off with a delicious savory sauce.

Any of these delicious meat recipes is sure to get your next barbecue of to a good start!

Grilled Texas Beef Steaks
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
4 slices eye of round, about 1 inch thick

Preheat barbecue and grease grill.

Blend seasonings in a small bowl. Sprinkle both sides of meat with seasonings, then gently press into meat. Place meat on barbecue and grill for 4 minutes per side for medium-rare meat.

Steaks are great with baked potatoes, which can be done on the grill as well. Simply follow these easy directions:

Wrap the potatoes in foil and put them on a cooler part of the grill so they won’t burn. Check them after about 30 minutes. Total cooking time depends on the size and can be as much as 45 minutes to 1 hour. They are done when they are soft right through to the inside.

Asian Grilled Pork Tenderloin
2 pork tenderloins

Marinade:
3 tablespoons orange juice concentrate
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 teaspoon sesame oil
1″ piece of ginger, peeled and sliced
3 cloves garlic, peeled and sliced

Place the pork tenderloins in a large plastic zip lock bag. Combine the marinade ingredients and pour over the pork tenderloins. Marinate for 2 to 6 hours.

Grill for about 20 minutes or bake in the oven at 375ºF. Baste often with the marinade.

Slice and serve.

Serves 4-5.

Barbecued Peach Pork Chops

1/4 cup fresh basil or mint, chopped
1/4 cup red pepper jelly, melted
2 tablespoons cider vinegar
1 tablespoon grainy mustard
3 cloves garlic, minced
1/4 teaspoon salt
pinch pepper
2 firm ripe peaches, unpeeled and sliced
4 thick bone in pork chops

Mix basil, red pepper jelly, vinegar, mustard, garlic, salt and pepper in a bowl. In a separate bowl, toss peaches with 2 tablespoons of the jelly mixture. Add the pork chops to the remaining mixture. Turn to coat and let stand for 20 minutes to marinate.

Place the pork chops and peaches on a greased grill over medium high heat. Close the lid and grill, turning halfway through, until peaches are browned, about 6 minutes. Remove the peaches and keep them warm. Cook chops until there is just a hint of pink inside, about 4 minutes longer.

4 servings

I hope these amazing recipes tempt your taste buds and encourage you to get grilling!
